RV Refrigerator Repair & Cooling Diagnostics
When your RV fridge isn't keeping food cold, builds heavy frost, or can't hold a steady temperature, the cause isn't always obvious. The unit can still be running while a bad connection, restricted airflow, or another issue keeps it from cooling properly.
Waypoint Mobile RV Repair diagnoses and repairs both gas absorption and electric compressor refrigerators. We find what's actually wrong so the right repair gets done.

Common RV Refrigerator Problems
Most RV fridge issues fall into a few familiar patterns:
- Not cold enough — Refrigerator or freezer won't reach or hold temperature
- Heavy frost — Thick ice on the evaporator, vents, or freezer walls
- Uneven temperatures — Freezer stays frozen while the refrigerator compartment gets too warm
- Different cooling on gas vs. electric — The refrigerator cools better on one power source than the other
These symptoms are useful clues, but the real fix comes from checking how the system is actually operating.
Why Does an RV Refrigerator Build Up Excessive Frost?
Some frost is normal, depending on the refrigerator design. Heavy frost, however, can become a problem.
Moisture enters when the door opens, warm items go inside, or outside air slips past a poorly sealing door gasket. As that moisture freezes, frost builds up on cold surfaces.
Depending on the design, a defrost-system fault or restricted airflow can make things worse. Heavy frost around evaporator surfaces or freezer vents can block cold air from reaching the refrigerator compartment, leaving the freezer frosty while the fridge gets too warm. Packing food items too tightly against the rear air vents can also reduce cooling efficiency.
Manually clearing the ice may help temporarily, but if an underlying issue caused the buildup, it can return.
The real fix is finding why the frost is forming — not just melting it away.
From the field
Real-World Repair: Failed Defrost Element Connection
One repair started with severe frost blocking the rear freezer vents and preventing cold air from reaching the refrigerator compartment. The root cause was a melted connector on the defrost heater element.
The damaged connection kept the defrost heater from working, allowing frost to build up and eventually restrict airflow.
Replacing the damaged connector restored the defrost heater's operation, and clearing the ice restored airflow to the refrigerator compartment. The visible problem was heavy frost; the underlying cause was an electrical failure.
Gas Absorption Refrigerator Issues
Gas absorption refrigerators cool differently from compressor models. They use heat to drive the cooling process, and their most common problems usually start behind the refrigerator.
These systems need good airflow at the rear to carry heat away from the cooling unit. Cool air enters through the lower vent, passes behind the refrigerator, and exits through an upper vent. If that path is blocked by debris, poor installation, or insufficient clearance, cooling performance can suffer — sometimes on both gas and electric.
Other issues include weak or inconsistent cooling, trouble operating on gas or electric, and, in some cases, an ammonia solution leak from the cooling unit itself. Hot weather and operating the coach outside the refrigerator manufacturer's leveling limits can also affect performance.
Good rear ventilation and keeping the coach reasonably level go a long way toward helping an absorption refrigerator cool as it should.
RV Refrigerator Diagnostics and Repair
Gas absorption and compressor refrigerators work differently, so diagnosis has to match the system.
Typical service includes:
- Checking cooling performance on gas and electric, where applicable
- Diagnosing excessive frost and defrost-system faults
- Inspecting electrical connections, heating elements, and sensors
- Looking for airflow restrictions and other conditions that reduce cooling
- Identifying failed components and determining the right repair
We focus on finding the cause and fixing it — not just treating the symptom.
